A finished naked raku fired piece by Wally Asselbergh, showing the variety of grays and blacks he achieves through the use of both diluted and thick glaze and varied application methods over the base resist slip. During the firing, the slip shrinks and cracks and breaks away from the piece allowing interesting and irregular smoking patterns to develop from the post firing reduction. He also shares the slip and glaze recipes he uses in this process. Remember, as with any firing process, especially those that involve an open flame, you should wear protective clothing and exercise all fire-safety precautions. In the traditional Japanese process, the fired raku piece is removed from the hot kiln and is allowed to cool in the open air. The familiar technique of placing the ware in a container filled with a combustible material, introduced by Paul Soldner, is not a traditional Raku practice. Raku techniques have been modified by contemporary potters worldwide. That was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi — , who was the leading warrior statesman of the time. The Raku technique has been recently adopted in Europe and changes fundamental principles.

This means that there is no glaze on the finished piece: It is an organic method, which works with the elements of fire, water, air and earth in the form of clay. This technique provides infinite variety; the results which are never the same twice.
Originally created for the Korean tea ceremony, this technique was subsequently found by ceramic adherents in the sixteenth century in Japan, where the great masters such as Sen no Rikyu were able to give full scope to the art based on a particular process: Also the colors were rendered with a more metallic appearance. As opposed to normal pottery firing where the wares cool down slowly in the kiln and removed with gloves, Raku ware is removed immediatly with tongs.
